Summer in Japan with a Baby: 5 Essentials to Beat the Heat

Japan is a fantastic destination for families, but if you're visiting during the summer months, it's worth being prepared. Temperatures are consistently above 30°C, and the humidity makes it feel even hotter.

As a mum myself, there are a few products I find make a huge difference when exploring Japan with babies and toddlers. Here are my top recommendations for staying comfortable during a Japanese summer.

1. Baby Cooling Wipes

One of the easiest ways to help little ones stay comfortable is with cooling wipes.

The Pigeon Cooling Body Wipes are designed specifically for babies and children and are perfect for wiping away sweat from sticky necks, backs, hands, and faces after a walk in the heat. I keep mine in the fridge and then in an insulated bag for when we're out for extra effect.

One thing to be aware of is that not all cooling wipes sold in Japan are suitable for babies. During the summer you'll find cooling wipes everywhere, from drugstores to convenience stores, and some packaging may even look child-friendly. However, many products are actually designed for adults and contain alcohol or stronger cooling ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin.

If you're buying cooling wipes locally, it's worth checking the packaging carefully with a translation app or asking a store staff member whether it's suitable for babies. Choosing a baby-specific product can help avoid discomfort, especially if your little one has sensitive skin or eczema.

2. Baby Sunscreen

The Japanese sun can be intense, especially during July and August. A good sunscreen is essential for days spent exploring parks, temples, gardens, and outdoor attractions.

One of my favourites is Kiss Me Mommy, a gentle sunscreen designed for babies and young children. It's lightweight, easy to apply, and doesn't leave a sticky feeling on the skin. It comes in 33 or 50 SPF; I use 50 SPF on my kids for peace of mind.

Of course, sunscreen works best alongside hats, shade, and lightweight clothing whenever possible.

3. Baby Electrolyte Drinks

Keeping little ones hydrated is one of the biggest challenges during a Japanese summer.

Aqualyte is a convenient electrolyte drink that can help replace fluids and minerals lost through sweating. It is suitable from 3 months of age, making it an option for younger babies as well as toddlers and older children.

It's particularly useful during long sightseeing days, theme park visits, or travel days when routines are disrupted. While it shouldn't replace your baby's usual milk feeds or regular drinks, it can be a helpful addition when you're concerned about hydration during hot weather. I include Wakodo Aqualyte in all my baby essentials boxes.

4. Cooling Gel Packs

A product many visitors might not know about is cooling gel packs.

These reusable packs can be placed inside specially designed stroller liners to help keep little ones cooler while they're sitting in the stroller. There are also smaller versions designed for baby carriers, helping to reduce heat build-up between parent and baby.

They're lightweight, reusable, and can make a noticeable difference on particularly hot days when you're spending hours outdoors.

5. Insect Protection

Mosquitoes are common throughout Japan during the summer months, especially in parks, temple grounds, gardens, and near rivers.

My advice is to bring your preferred insect repellent from home if you already have one that works well for your family. While there are plenty of mosquito repellent products available in Japan, some parents find them less effective than the brands they're used to using at home.

That said, if you do get bitten while you're here, Baby Muhi is a product that many families in Japan swear by. This gentle anti-itch cream is designed for babies and young children and can help soothe mosquito bites and reduce scratching. The regular Muhi is a bit stronger and better suited to adults' skin.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

Japan is an incredibly family-friendly destination, but summer can be challenging if you're not prepared for the heat and humidity.

A few carefully chosen items can make sightseeing more comfortable, reduce stress, and help everyone enjoy the trip a little more.

All of the products mentioned above are available through Little Nomads Japan and can be delivered directly to your hotel or accommodation. That means less time shopping and more time enjoying your holiday with your family.

Whether you're visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, or beyond, a little preparation can make all the difference during Japan's hot summer months.
